Imam Abdus Samad Qazi

Imam Abdus Samad was born in India in 1892, and thereafter came to South Africa as a young man with his uncle, Mawlana Abdul Latief Qazi who was the cousin and Khalifa of the great saint, Hazrath Soofie Saheb Rahmatullah Alayh, and stayed with him in Cape Town.

He studied under Shaykh Muhammad Salih Hendricks of the Azawiya Musjid in Cape Town who was a student of Shaykh Umar Bajunayd and Sayyid Husayn al Hibshi, who in turn narrated directly from the great Sayyid Ahmad Dahlan. He then travelled with his uncle to Makkah Mukarramah to further his studies at Madrasah Sawlatiya and also under other great scholars of the Hijaz such as Shaykh Mansur and Ahmad Hamzah ar Rifa’i in Madina Munowara. He also derived benefit from Hazrath Mawlana Ahmad Mukhtar Siddiqi as well as Hazrath Shah Ghulam Hafiz Soofie who was the son of Hazrath Soofie Saheb Rahmatullah Alayh.

He served as Imam at the Wynberg and Soofie Musjid in Cape Town, and later at the Soofie Musjid in Kenville as well as the Jamia Musjid in Grey Street Durban for 25 years. He was a Qari of par excellence who recited at several gatherings, especially during Ulama and Masha’ikh visits, notably the visit by Mawlana Abdul Aleem Siddiqi, Qari Tayyab Saheb (Rector of Darul Uloom) and the legendary Shaykh Abdul Basit Abdus Samad of Egypt.

He passed away in 1967, at the age of 75, and is buried at the Soofie Saheb Cemetery in Riverside, Durban. May Allah Ta’ala elevate his status and grant him the highest station in Jannah.

The Academy was appropriately named in continuing with the illustrious legacy of the great Imam and Qari, in order to propagate the correct standard of quality Qur’anic studies and recitation.

Apart from the Academy having a variety of classes being offered, for both, males and females (of all age groups), the core aim is to equip students with fundamental knowledge to recite the Qur’an in its correct manner as was revealed to Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.

There are numerous Ahadeeth indicating the great virtues of reciting and memorizing the Qur’an. Sayyiduna Ali Radi’allahu’an narrates that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam mentioned:
“Whoever recites the Qur’an and memorizes it, and regards what it makes lawful, as lawful, and it’s unlawful as forbidden, will be admitted to Jannah by Allah Ta’ala. Allah Ta’ala will also accept his intercession in respect of ten of his family members on whom the fire of hell was binding.” - (Tirmidhi)

However, it is unfortunate that in recent time, there has been more focus on the memorization only, regardless of the quality of recitation and in some cases no importance given to the correct method of recitation, pronunciation, rules and regulations which is totally against the command of the Qur’an.

Sayyiduna Hudhaifah Radi’allahu’an narrates that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam mentioned:
“There are many reciters of the Qur’an whom the Qur’an curses.”

One of the reasons for the Qur’an cursing its reciter is due to incorrect pronunciation and lack in practicing upon the rules and regulations of reciting the Qur’an. However, the above narration excludes those individuals, whom despite making an effort are naturally unable to recite correctly.

It is for this reason, IASQA has been established in order to focus on the quality of recitation and thus preserving the Qur’an in its purest form and to provide students an opportunity to study the various sciences of recitation as well.

May Allah Ta’ala guide us and grant us the ability to attain closeness to Him and his beloved Messenger, Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.
